Abstract: This talk reviews recent progress in the use of time lens based optical Fourier transformation for advanced optical signal processing, with focus on all-optical generation, detection and format conversion of spectrally-efficient OFDM and N-WDM signals.

Biography: Dr. Pengyu Guan received the Ph.D. degree in communication engineering from Tohoku University, Japan.  He intensively engaged in research on ultrahigh-speed optical time-division multiplexed (OTDM) transmission in the group of Professor Masataka Nakazawa for six years. During this period, he made several significant contributions towards the improved performance of ultrahigh-speed OTDM transmission at 1 Tbit/s/ch and faster, using the time lens based optical Fourier transformation (OFT) technique. In particular, he successfully demonstrated 2.56 Tbit/s/ch transmission over 300 km, which was the longest distance at such a high single-channel bit rate. For his achievements, he received the student award, “Best Paper Prize”, from the IEEE Section in 2009, the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self financed Students Abroad in 2010, and the Tohoku University Presidential Prize in 2012 as the highest honor for Ph.D. graduation.

After spending one year as a postdoc with Professor Nakazawa’s group, he joined theTechnical University of Denmark (DTU) in 2013, and has since been playing an active role in developing novel ultrafast optical signal processing techniques in Professor Oxenløwe’s group. He proposed novel all-optical signal processing schemes for highly spectrally efficient data signals based on the concept of the time lens based OFT, including generation, detection and format conversion of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing and Nyquist wavelength division multiplexing signals. He has authored and co authored 45 peer reviewed publications, and he holds 2 patents.
